Lister Research Prizes

The awards are aimed at researchers in the early years of running their own groups, for whom receipt of the prize would make a significant difference to their research work.
The Institute’s approach to funding continues to be unique in that it accepts applications from tenured and non-tenured researchers, clinicians and non-clinicians, and has no priority diseases or restrictions on the research area supported.
This approach ensures that research prize holders are given the freedom to develop their research careers individually, while also fostering a sense of identity within the Lister community.

Lister Institute Summer Studentships

As part of our aim to nurture the future leaders in biomedical research the Lister Institute provides funding for summer students in biomedical fields.
Summer studentships provide a real opportunity for Lister Fellows to receive additional support for their research through having a summer student working in their lab. It also provides a great opportunity for an under-graduate student to experience working in a top laboratory and to undertake their own project. The students are invited to attend the Lister Annual Fellows meeting and to present their research in a poster presentation. This is particularly valuable to those thinking about a career in research.
The Lister Summer Studentships were first established in 2011 with 20 studentships awarded. Since that time over 200 have been funded. The summer studentship scheme is open to Fellows and Former Fellows of the Institute working in the UK and provides funding for a student to spend time working in a Fellow’s laboratory during the summer holiday period.
The popularity and success of the scheme has resulted in the trustees growing the number of awards with up to 50 studentships to be awarded in 2023. The award has proved to be an excellent ‘stepping-stone’ in the careers of the students with the majority registering for PhDs and a number going on to publish in high profile journals.
